The City is no stranger to construction. The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) and other City Agencies have hundreds of active construction projects underway to improve our water, sewer, power, transit and other systems we rely on. The SFPUC works with local communities and merchants to help minimize the impacts that construction has on their lives and businesses.

In the spirit of Valentine's Day, here are two active construction projects in San Francisco, where local businesses could use your support. Share some love and head over to Hayes Valley and the Richmond.

Hayes Valley Sewer Improvements Project

The Hayes Valley Sewer Improvements Project is practically next door to the SFPUC’s headquarters at 525 Golden Gate Ave building. Crews are working to rehabilitate the existing 100+ year old sewer mains located under several streets in the neighborhood. Currently, the project is in active construction, with all sewer improvements estimated to be finished this winter.

Labeled as the heart of San Francisco, the neighborhood has a number of different restaurants, boutiques, and other services. Check out what local businesses you can support in Hayes Valley.

Aging water and sewer pipelines are being replaced or rehabilitated on Geary Boulevard.

Geary Boulevard Sewer and Water Improvements Phase 2

Modernizing the Richmond District’s water and sewer infrastructure along Geary Boulevard from 32nd Avenue to Stanyan Street is no easy task. The Geary Boulevard Sewer and Water Improvements Phase 2 began construction last month, with the project team working with local business owners to understand their concerns and share details about the project.

The historical Richmond District has various shops and restaurants that need your support while this multi-phased project is estimated to be in the area until 2027. Check out what local businesses you can support in the Inner Richmond and Central Richmond.

It’s Necessary Work, but a Little Love Can Go a Long Way

For communities like the Richmond and Hayes Valley, sewer upgrades are impactful but necessary. Many of the existing infrastructure is over 100 years old, and to ensure that the City and our communities continue to thrive, these projects are a must. Yet, during construction, we can all do our part of supporting the local businesses that have been impacted by the work of the SFPUC.
