Our water system is fortunate to have some of the best water in the U.S. Our major water source is the well-protected Tuolumne Watershed, where spring snowmelt flows from the Tuolumne River into Hetch Hetchy Reservoir. We rigorously protect and test the quality of your water to ensure that it meets or exceeds all federal and state standards for health.

The City and County of San Francisco has a cross-connection control program to protect the City’s drinking water distribution system from contamination caused by backflow. All potential cross-connections must be protected with an approved backflow prevention assembly.
Our high quality source water does not contain lead. We monitor for lead in drinking water through a variety of programs, work closely with the San Francisco Department of Public Health, and provide lead information to our customers.
