Hummingbird Farm
Hummingbird Farm transforms underutilized land into a community farm with the goal of supporting the health and wellness of residents. The farm aims to teach water conservation and sustainable food practices to communities in the Excelsior neighborhood and the Southeast while training community leaders to promote growing and eating healthy food.
About the Farm
Hummingbird Farm began through a collaboration between the SFPUC and People Organizing to Demand Environmental and Economic Rights (PODER) to repurpose underutilized SFPUC property in the Excelsior neighborhood into a community farm.
Managed and operated by PODER, with support from SFPUC, Hummingbird Farm serves local environmental justice communities, offers public educational opportunities, and promotes sustainable land stewardship.
Since its inception in 2017, Hummingbird Farm has been a space for education, healing, and collective action. The Farm provides hundreds of pounds of organic fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers to the community each year and provides a space for individuals of all ages and abilities to participate in farming, educational activities, and cultural celebrations.
Building Community
PODER hosts a range of activities at the farm, including regular farm volunteer days, watershed workshops, and sunrise ceremonies.
In 2023, PODER hosted 188 gardening days, community workshops, field trips, and cultural events that reached over 2,300 participants and 1,000 garden volunteers. Hummingbird Farm’s commitment to community engagement fosters collective action in safeguarding our planet.
Environmental Stewardship
Hummingbird Farm demonstrates agricultural and land stewardship practices that promote ecological restoration. This includes farming according to permaculture principles – without pesticides and causing minimal impact to the land. Vegetation is planted that helps manage, filter, and reuse rainwater. Currently, PODER is also working with San Francisco Recreation and Parks and SFPUC Natural Resources and Lands Management Division to restore the native grassland habitat adjacent to the farm.
