Overview

The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) is constructing a new six-mile segment of the Bay Area Ridge Trail and enhancing the existing Fifield-Cahill Ridge Trail with the construction of an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant loop trail. Funding for the Southern Skyline Boulevard Ridge Trail Extension Project is provided by the SFPUC Water Enterprise Capital Improvement Program and a grant from the Federal Highway Administration (Federal Project ID: STPL-62).

3- WEEK CONSTRUCTION UPDATE -- Week of November 4, 2024 through Week of November 18, 2024

SOUTH OF HIGHWAY 92 -- Construction of Middle Section of trail well underway; SR35 parking lot placement of structural fill material and testing compaction; installing new boundary fence.

NORTH OF HIGHWAY 92 -- Grading of Cahill Parking Lot; UAL Trail and Parking Lot delay for design changes; fabricating bathroom at Cahill Parking Lot.

Project Background

The Fifield-Cahill Ridge Trail Opened in 2003. The 10-mile trail extends from the Skyline Quarry at Highway 92 to the north SFPUC peninsula watershed boundary, where it connects with the Golden Gate National Recreational Area trail system and Sweeney Ridge. The objective of the Southern Skyline Boulevard Ridge Trail Extension Project is to provide public access to the Peninsula Watershed and enhance educational opportunities while ensuring watershed protection.

Members of the public can make reservations online for volunteer-led excursions on the trail for hikers, cyclists, and equestrians three days a week. https://sfpuc.org/learning/come-visit/fifield-cahill-ridge-trail
Location and Components of the New Trail Segments
The work is occurring within the SFPUC’s Peninsula Watershed in two locations:
1. North of State Route 92 along the existing Fifield-Cahill Ridge Trail;
  - Construction of a new .5-mile-long universal access loop trail, a 50-car parking lot along with trailhead improvements; and
2. South of State Route 92 & East of State Route 35 (also known as Skyline Boulevard);
  1. Construction of a new 6-mile-long trail segment to be served by a new 24-car parking lot and trailhead improvements.
  2. Construction of wildlife-friendly security fencing and other security features;
  3. Installation of a pedestrian bridge, pre-fabricated restrooms and interpretive signage.
