Eagle sculpture on the watershed grounds — Rúupaywa: Songs of the Watershed is a sculptural and sonic installation honoring the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe by artist Walter Kitundu. Ruupaywa (the eagle) is a chief, a protector, and a creator in the Muwekma Ohlone creation story.

The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission has been constructing an interpretive center on our watershed lands in the East Bay. Due to construction delays, we do not have a planned opening date at present.

The Alameda Creek Watershed Center will showcase the community benefits and public education aspects of the Water Enterprise Environmental Stewardship Policy. It will fulfill our commitment to develop public education and recreation amenities at this site. The Center will be located adjacent to the Sunol Water Temple, as well as the nearby Sunol AgPark and newly-constructed Corporation Yard and Watershed Nursery.

The Alameda Creek Watershed Center will provide a gathering place and educational resource to increase awareness and appreciation of the natural, cultural, scenic and recreational landscape of the Alameda Creek watershed while providing an overview of the critical role played by the Hetch Hetchy Regional Water Supply system, including its history and current operation.

Key elements of the Watershed Center include:

Exhibit Hall – hands on interactive exhibits telling the unique story of the Alameda Creek Watershed lands.
History Alcoves – educational exhibits describing the history of the Muwekma Ohlone who inhabited the area, early ranching and agriculture in the Valley, construction of the first Calaveras Dam, and construction of the Sunol Water Temple.
Watershed Discovery Lab – a learning laboratory for students, teachers, and families.
Public artworks by Walter Kitundu and Adrian Arias, displayed in the Center’s gardens and community meeting room.
Community Room – a meeting location for local groups.
Watershed Discovery Trail – a two-acre outdoor area that mirrors the watershed’s ecology with native plants, a trail and a meandering stream.
Picnic Area – restoration of a historic picnic area adjacent to the Sunol Water Temple.
Trail Hub - The Center will be a hub for a future regional trail system.
