Hetch Hetchy Power honored for dependable service from the American Public Power Association
San Francisco, CA –The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) has received national recognition for achieving exceptional electric reliability in 2020. Hetch Hetchy Power, the City’s public power utility, was one of the nation’s most dependable service providers last year, according to the American Public Power Association (APPA), a trade group that represents more than 2,000 not-for-profit, community-owned electric utilities.
“We’re honored to receive this recognition from the APPA, which highlights our commitment to providing reliable, clean electricity for San Francisco,” said SFPUC Acting General Manager Michael Carlin. “It is also a testament to the hard work of our staff to ensure we keep San Francisco powered even during a pandemic.”
APPA helps electric utilities like the SFPUC track power outage and restoration data through its eReliability Tracker service. Once a year, APPA’s Reliability Team compares this data to national statistics tracked by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) for all types of electric utilities. Hetch Hetchy Power scored in the top 25 percent of all utilities for System Average Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI) based on EIA data from 2015 – 2019.
“Public power utilities have proven their commitment to serving their community by continuing to lead the nation in reliability,” said Alex Hofmann, APPA’s Vice President of Technical and Operations Services. “These utilities are the best of the best when it comes to keeping the lights on in their communities.”
Hetch Hetchy Power provides 100 percent greenhouse gas-free energy to public facilities such as City Hall, schools and libraries, some private commercial developments like Salesforce Transit Center, and affordable housing. Along with CleanPowerSF, the City’s community choice aggregation program, the two systems meet more than 70 percent of the electricity demand in San Francisco.
