As we approach warmer weather and wildfire season, we want you to be prepared in the event of a Flex Alert, PG&E Public Safety Shutoff, or rotating power outages. Although these events are infrequent in San Francisco, preparing in advance is still key. 
 
 We’re here to help you understand these different events and make sure you have the information you need to stay safe and ready for any potential power disruptions. Let’s break it down together. 

Flex Alerts

A Flex Alert is a request to voluntarily conserve electricity during periods of high demand, typically from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. when the electric grid is most strained. Issued by the California Independent System Operator (ISO), these alerts help prevent rotating power outages.

When a Flex Alert is issued, we encourage customers to use less electricity. You can save energy and help prevent rotating power outages by using small appliances and waiting to do high energy chores (like laundry or running the dishwasher) until after 9pm. Public Safety Power Shutoffs

Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) are planned power outages initiated by PG&E to prevent wildfires during high fire-threat conditions. PSPS events help reduce the risk of trees or debris damaging power lines.

To prepare for a PSPS, make sure you are signed up for notifications. Visit PG&E Alerts to check that your contact information is up to date and to view the outage map in real-time.

Rotating Outages

Rotating power outages can occur when there is not enough energy to meet the high demand. Rotating outages may occur with little advance warning as they are an emergency measure taken by California ISO and implemented by PG&E across its service territory.
