New Developments Utility Infrastructure
The SFPUC mission is to provide customers with high quality, efficient and reliable water, power, and sewer services in a manner that is inclusive of environmental and community interests, and that sustains the resources entrusted to our care. SFPUC is engaged in the planning, design and construction of new utility infrastructure for City projects and development projects. For all newly constructed utility infrastructure, the following SFPUC Design Guidelines & Standards for Water, Power and Wastewater apply, in addition to other applicable City, State, and Federal codes and standards.

- Onsite Water Reuse
Adoption of Article 12C by the Board of Supervisors and adoption of rules and regulations by the Department of Public Health will help achieve the City's goals for water supply use and preservation. New developments within the City and County of San Francisco with Gross Floor Areas (GFA) exceeding 100,000 sq ft for Large Developments or between 40,000 SF and 100,000 sq ft for Small Developments are subject to the Onsite Water Reuse Program. Onsite Water Reuse Systems allow for the collection, treatment, and use of alternative water sources for non-potable applications in individual buildings and at District-Scale.
- Recycled Water Use
Owners of properties located within a designated Recycled Water Area as described by Section 1209, Article 22 of the San Francisco Public Works Code are subject to the Recycled Water Use Ordinance and must install recycled water systems for the development.
- Water Efficient Landscape
Development projects with 500 square feet or more of new or modified landscaped area are required to comply with the Water Efficient Irrigation Ordinance. Projects must design, install, and maintain efficient irrigation systems, utilize low water-use plantings, and set an annual water budget.
