Although we reliably serve drinking water to 2.7 million Bay Area customers, our water supplies are vulnerable over the long term. Issues out of our control will have a direct impact on our ability to continue to meet the needs of our customers. These include global climate change, population growth, and regulations that will reduce the amount of water we can use from some of our current sources.
As good stewards of the resources in our care, we must find new sources of water supply. Finding new sources of water is incredibly complicated here in the Bay Area and takes decades to plan and design. We have worked for years and have already brought new water supply resources online such as groundwater, recycled water, and onsite reuse.

We promote projects that envision, research, and implement new ways to conserve, reuse, and recover resources.
Finding and evaluating new sources of water supply is very complicated, and these projects take decades to plan and design.
The goal of the Alternative Supply Planning Program is to evaluate all potential sources of future water supply and begin the hard work of bringing some of those sources online so they are available in the coming decades.
