The colder months often bring higher energy bills for homeowners, renters and businesses. San Francisco is a “winter peaking” region, which means we use more energy in the winter season than any other time of year. As temperatures drop during these months, heating systems work overtime, and shorter days mean increased reliance on artificial lighting. However, reducing your electricity bill doesn’t have to be a daunting task. With a few strategic changes, you can help manage your bill.

Energy-Saving Tips for Residential Customers
1. Plan High-Energy Activities Wisely
- Run your dishwasher, laundry machines, and other high-energy appliances during off-peak hours. As an easy reminder, remember to “Check the time for 4-9" and wait to use higher-energy consuming appliances before 4pm or after 9pm.
2. Adjust Appliance Settings
- Set your water heater to 120°F to save up to 22% of energy spent on water heating annually.
- Wash full loads of laundry on lower temperature settings to conserve energy.
- Keep your refrigerator at 38°F to minimize energy usage; refrigerators are among the most energy-intensive appliances.
3. Optimize Appliance Usage
- Use smaller appliances like microwaves, toaster ovens, or stovetops instead of conventional ovens.
- Plug electronics into power strips and turn them off when not in use to prevent standby energy consumption.
- Use fans or space heaters selectively instead of central heating when appropriate
Energy-Savings Tips for Commercial Customers
1. Maximize Night Light
- Open blinds or window coverings in the morning to let sunlight warm your office or business naturally.
2. Seal Air Leaks
- Check for drafts around windows and doors. Use caulking or foam insulation to reduce heat loss and improve energy efficiency.
3. Thermostat Management
- Set your thermostat higher during working hours and lower it toward the end of the day when fewer people are present.
4. Upgrade Lighting
- Replace older light bulbs with energy-efficient LEDs, especially in older buildings, to reduce energy consumption.
Understanding Time-of-Use Rates
In California, many electricity customers experience Time-of-Use (E-TOU) rates. This means electricity costs more during peak hours, typically from 4pm to 9pm, when energy demand is at its highest. To save money, focus on performing high-energy activities like running the dishwasher, doing laundry, or charging electronics during off-peak hours – before 4pm or after 9pm.
By adopting these tips, you can reduce your energy use this winter. Whether you’re a homeowner, renter or managing a business, small changes can make a difference.
