The Southeast Community Center (SECC) is excited to announce a series of events for Black History Month hosted by various City departments, local organizations, and community members. All are welcome and invited to join us in celebrating Black History at the SECC. 

February kickstarts one of many celebrations throughout the year to acknowledge the culture and contributions of the Black diaspora across the world. In the United States, Negro History Week was one of the first iterations of celebrating Black History on a national scale. The first weeklong celebration was spearheaded by Carter G. Woodson in 1926. 

Since then, Black History Month has transformed into an annual cornerstone celebration for Black people and allies across the United States. In San Francisco, Bayview Hunters Point has established itself as a beacon, inspiring Black culture, innovation, and achievement. Though the Bayview Hunters Point neighborhood is often associated with a history of undeniable systemic inequity and injustice, one cannot deny the community’s impact in conserving and progressing Black culture in San Francisco.

Black Families Play and Learn
Every Tuesday, February 6 -27, 5-6 PM | Third Floor Islais Creek Room
Edgewood Family Resource Center is hosting a workshop series every Tuesday for families with children under five to play, learn, and grow. Light refreshments will be provided. 

Dr. Espanola Jackson Day
Friday, February 9, 3-7 PM | Alex Pitcher Pavilion 
Dr. Espanola Jackson, also known as one of the Big Six, was a prominent leader in the fight to mitigate the environmental harm of the relocation of the sewage plant and other dirty industries to Bayview Hunters Point. The event will celebrate her legacy and inspire the next generation of leaders to advocate for justice. 

Valentine’s Day Cards for Golden Citizens 
Saturday, February 10, 11 AM-4 PM | Alex Pitcher Pavilion 
Southeast Community Facility Commissioner Damien Posey, also known as Uncle Damien, will host an R&B Valentine’s Day card party in honor of the elders in the Southeast Community. The event is open to youth and young adults who would like to create cards to distribute in various senior citizen centers. Food and light refreshments will be served.  

100 Black Men of the Bay Area Health Fair
Friday, February 16, 12-4 PM | SECC, campus-wide 
Join 100 Black Men of the Bay Area for a community health fair in the Southeast community. Individuals will receive no-cost peripheral artery disease and blood glucose screenings from health professionals. Register here.

Black History Parade and Community Party
Saturday, February 24, parade at 11 am, party at 12 PM | Parade starts at the Bayview Opera House, party and sculpture unveiling at SECC
The parade and festival celebrate the long history of San Francisco’s Black community and its contributions to the City. The parade will start at the Bayview Opera House on Third Street and Newcomb. The procession of horses, classic cars, floats, dancers, and revelers will make their way down Third Street starting at 11 a.m. The parade will end at the SECC, where the community will gather to enjoy a full afternoon of activities, performances, the unveiling of a Hearts in San Francisco sculpture, and free food, including a gumbo tasting! San Francisco General Hospital Heart Unveiling Ceremony 
Saturday, February 24, 1 PM | Founders Amphitheatre (behind Alex Pitcher Pavillion)
The San Francisco General Hospital will unveil a San Francisco heart sculpture that will be on display at the SECC. The heart sculpture titled Justice was created and designed by André Renay a local Bayview artist.  

The SECC is honored to be the venue of choice for individuals, elected officials, and businesses to host events and lead this critical work.
