As Needed Water Service Line Replacement Program
Overview
Water quality improvements will be made at various locations across San Francisco by replacing galvanized steel utility service lines with new, copper utility service lines. A utility service line is a small pipe that connects a house or building’s water meter box to a water main.
Some utility service lines made of galvanized steel also contain flexible lead components to connect to the water main. These flexible lead components, commonly called goosenecks, pigtails, or whips, are approximately three feet in length and could contribute low levels of lead to drinking water. Any lead components that are found will be replaced alongside the utility service line.
Your water meets all federal and state drinking water standards and is safe to drink.
