Hayes Valley Sewer Improvements Project
Overview
As part of the SFPUC's wastewater capital investments, the Hayes Valley Sewer Improvements Project will rehabilitate the existing 100+ year old sewer mains located under several streets located in Hayes Valley.
December 2024 Construction Update
- Starting the week of December 2, crews will mobilize for manhole and sewer lateral upgrades along Franklin Street between Oak Street and Page Street.
- Starting mid December, crews will mobilize for manhole and sewer lateral upgrades along Franklin Street between Golden Gate Avenue and McAllister Street.
- For both locations:
- Work sites will be located within the center lane of traffic and intersection. Through traffic will be maintained on all impacted roads with traffic control measures in place.
- Expect some impacts to street parking, see posted signs.
- These activities will have an estimated duration of 5 weeks.
Access to properties will be maintained. Expect noise, vibration, and odor impacts while this work is being completed.

Project Background
Wherever possible and to minimize impacts to the roadway and adjacent residences and businesses, most of the sewer mains will be rehabilitated with a trenchless method called Cured-in-Placed Pipe (CIPP). Where CIPP cannot be performed, the sewer mains will be replaced or rehabilitated with open-excavation. Construction will include improvements to sewer lower laterals within the project area, which may also require open-excavation. When completed, this project will increase the reliability of our City’s critical sewer system infrastructure.

What to Expect During Construction
SEWER SERVICE: These services will NOT be interrupted during construction.
PARKING: Street parking will be impacted near construction zones. “No-parking” signs will be posted 72 hours in advance.
TRAFFIC: Partial and/or full lane closures may be necessary to ensure safety of workers and the public. Advance notice and detour signage will be provided, as needed.
MUNI: Passenger loading zone for bus stops may be temporary relocated. Advance notice and detour signage will be provided as needed.
ACCESS: Follow posted signage on site. Driveway access to businesses and residents in the work zone will be maintained during construction.
NOISE: Neighbors may hear construction noise periodically. Noisy work will be conducted in compliance with the San Francisco Noise Ordinance.
ODORS: If necessary, odor control measures will be in place during construction. Please see CIPP page for more information.
NOTICE: A 30-day and 10-day notice will be distributed prior to construction to residents and businesses within the project area before construction begins.
