Public Power Week celebrates publicly owned utilities, like the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC), and all the benefits they provide to customers such as affordable rates and reliable power. As an agency, the SFPUC is able to deliver for their customers everyday thanks to their dedicated workforce. SFPUC staff works around the clock to construct, maintain, and repair electrical infrastructure, keeping San Francisco safe, illuminated, and electrified.

Today, we’re spotlighting one of the many hardworking professionals who make it all happen: Jason Siebert, a dedicated electrician for the SFPUC and a proud 5th generation San Franciscan.

Jason's Journey to the SFPUC

Jason didn’t always know he wanted to be an electrician. After a brief stint in college, he realized that the traditional path wasn’t for him. He tried getting into a union in Sonoma County, but when that didn’t work out, he started working for a local electrician, building his skills from the ground up. Through that opportunity, Jason found his calling and entered an apprenticeship program, eventually making his way to the SFPUC.

Now, as an electrician with the SFPUC, Jason’s day-to-day tasks range from fixing streetlights and installing meters to handling emergency knockdowns and restoring power safely and efficiently. "You need the lights and power to keep things running," Jason explains. "It’s all about keeping the City safe and making sure it’s not dark out there."

A Legacy in San Francisco

Jason’s connection to San Francisco runs deep. He proudly shares that his great-great-grandfather had the job of lighting the gas lamps along Market Street in the early days of the City. Now, in a twist of history, Jason is modernizing those same streets by converting the lights to energy-efficient LEDs. “It’s pretty cool that I’m doing the same thing he did, just with newer technology,” Jason says, reflecting on his family’s legacy in the City.

As a 5th generation San Franciscan—he may even be 9th generation, he jokes—Jason is continuing his family’s long-standing relationship with San Francisco. This personal history enriches his work, making it even more meaningful to contribute to San Francisco's future as part of the SFPUC team.

A Champion for Public Power and Clean Energy

Jason’s role also supports the clean energy efforts of the SFPUC. He has worked on installing and maintaining solar panels across municipal buildings, including schools like Marina Middle School, the North Point Water Station, City Hall, and Davies Symphony Hall. His work directly supports the City’s goal of reducing carbon emissions and moving toward a sustainable future.

For Jason, every day brings something new. "It’s a different problem that I’m troubleshooting or figuring out. It’s not always the same," he says. This constant challenge, coupled with the satisfaction of working outdoors in his beloved city, makes the job worthwhile.

Advice for Aspiring Electricians

For those considering a career in electrical work, Jason offers this advice: "It’s always changing with technology, so there’s always something new to learn." He appreciates that the field isn’t static, and that there’s plenty of room for growth and learning. Whether it’s installing solar panels, troubleshooting outages, or lighting up the city streets, there’s always a fresh challenge waiting.
